Why the length is the wrong number to plan on
Nineteen and a bit kilometres sounds like a long day rather than an impossible one, and on flat ground it would be. It is not flat ground. The island runs up to about 231 metres and the roads and tracks go over the terrain rather than around it, so the honest version of an end-to-end walk is a serious tramp, not a day trip with a ferry at each end. Add the crossing — about forty to forty-five minutes each way — and the arithmetic stops being interesting.
The other thing people underestimate is where the boat puts them. You land at Matiatia Wharf at the western end. Oneroa, the main village, is the nearest settlement to it. Everything else on the island is further away than that, and the far end is the whole 19.3 kilometres.
What is worth walking
- Village to beach. The most common and the most rewarding, and it needs no planning beyond a look at a map.
- A headland. Short, steep and where the views are. The 231 metres exist for a reason.
- One bay, properly. Rather than three bays badly. This is the single best piece of advice on this page.
