Free things to do on Waiheke Island
What is actually free
- The beaches. Swimming costs nothing and the bays are the best thing here. Where you can swim.
- Walking. Village-to-beach and headland walks are free and they are what the island is shaped for. The high point is about 231 metres, so there is a view at the end of the climb.
- Oneroa. The main village, and the closest settlement to Matiatia Wharf. Wandering it costs nothing; the shops and cellar doors in it are a separate matter.
- The crossing itself, as a view. You are paying for the ferry either way, so you may as well go outside for it. Bronwyn, on the return ticket: “Easy instructions for finding the ferry terminal & ferry was comfortable, on time & very scenic”.
What is not free, however it is described
Two things get called free on other pages and are not. The public buses run under Auckland Transport and charge a fare — I am not printing the figure, because the one available to me was secondary-sourced, and Auckland Transport publishes the real one at at.govt.nz. And cellar door tastings are not included in any bus pass; you pay at the counter.
Which leaves the practical version of a free day: take the ferry, then work within walking range of where you land or of one bus ride, and spend nothing after that. It is a good day. It is also the reason to pick one corner of the island rather than three — 19.3 kilometres of hills does not walk itself.
If free is the point, sail off-peak. The cheaper return applies to departures from 1pm out of Auckland, which cuts the fare and leaves you an afternoon to spend on your feet rather than a day you feel obliged to fill with bookings.
How you move around without spending much is the one other thing worth reading before a free day, because the transport is where a no-spend plan usually springs a leak.
