Premium eBike adventure on Waiheke: an honest review

My verdict: a good day out for confident cyclists and the wrong purchase for almost everybody else. Two things need saying before anything else. The crossing is not in the price, because the bike is handed to you at Matiatia and you have to be standing there already. And this is much the thinnest review sample on the site, thin enough that one bad week would move the average. Read the individual reviews rather than the average, and start with the critical ones — they are the informative ones.

The advertised price is NZ$119. This tour starts on Waiheke, so the crossing is on you: add NZ$46.50 off-peak or NZ$62 on-peak and the real number is NZ$165.50–181 per person. The operator is upfront about this and even names both ferry companies. That is the figure to compare against the tours that do include the ferry.

What you get

Four and a half hours with a charged e-bike, a safety briefing, a paper map and route maps delivered through an app, starting from Matiatia Ferry Terminal. It is self-guided: there is no guide riding with you and no group to keep up with. You need to be 12 or over, at least 145cm tall, and able to ride a bike — the operator says so plainly and I would take it literally.

The reviews: a thin sample, honestly read

Thirty-five reviews is not enough to average with any confidence, so I have read them instead. The two four-star ones are the most useful text on the whole listing. “Great service. It would have been nice to have information about the length of the routes with the corresponding battery before booking.” (Ute) — that is a real gap on a hilly island where the battery is the whole point. “It was great, just need something to charge the phone (the GPS eats a lot of battery)” (Angélique). Take a power bank. Nothing on the listing suggests one is provided.

The five-star reviews are consistent about who this suits. “I definitely recommend this for anyone who regularly cycles 50+ kilometers.” (Nienke) is a recommendation with a condition attached, and the condition matters: Waiheke is 19.3 km end to end and hilly, topping out around 231 metres. “Perfect app that explains everything, gives travel tips, shows the routes, and suggests good restaurants.” (Simon). The app comes out well; the terrain does not care.

Insider tip

Bring a power bank and a cable. Two of the four reviews I would call informative mention the phone battery, because the routes live in an app and the app eats the phone. It is the cheapest thing you can do to improve this day.

Who it suits

Regular cyclists, people who would rather not be on anybody’s schedule, and anyone travelling with a bike-confident teenager. It does not suit nervous riders, anyone who has not been on a bike in years, or a group that wants to drink at the vineyards, for reasons that should not need spelling out. If the appeal is a car-free day rather than the cycling specifically, the buses, taxis and walks cover the island perfectly well, and the Explorer bus combo costs less all in.
